The project
The image shows the installation of a Hunter Isca 5 woodburning stove, a highly efficient and clean-burning stove that combines modern styling with excellent heating performance. We installed the Hunter Isca 5 into this home near Lichfield, creating a stylish and practical focal point for the room while providing an efficient source of heat. Its compact design makes it particularly well suited to a range of living spaces, while the large viewing window provides an impressive view of the flames.As part of this project, we removed the existing fireplace before safely capping and sealing off the gas supply ready for the new woodburning stove installation.
A large fireplace chamber was created by opening the masonry breast to provide the correct proportions for the new Isca 5 woodburning stove. A reinforced concrete lintel was fixed to support the masonry above the new opening, before the rear chamber wall was lined with a reclaimed brick slip. A smooth non-combustible Glasroc Firecase material which can then be painted to match or contrast the room was used for the chamber sides.
The work
What we did
The dark slate hearth was then laid inside the chamber and measuring approximately 900 x 370mm. In front of the chimney breast the hearth measured 1200mm x 380mm x 20mm high. This provides a perfect complement to the existing oak floor.
We then fixed the natural oak beam, measuring 1200mm × 140mm × 35mm thick. The beam was supplied in a medium finish, to complement the existing engineered oak flooring which created a stunning centrepiece to the room.
To ensure the installation is completely safe and operates efficiently, we installed a British-manufactured twin-wall stainless steel flexible flue liner, together with an anti-downdraught cowl fitted to the chimney pot. The cowl helps prevent birds, rain and debris from entering the flue while also helping to reduce the risk of wind-related downdraught, ensuring the stove can operate safely and effectively.
The installation was completed with an Isca 5 woodburning stove and a carbon monoxide alarm. The appliance was fully commissioned, safety tested and demonstrated to the homeowners before handover.
Direct External Air Supply
To maximise the overall efficiency, the new Isca 5 was installed with a direct air supply. This system provides clean unheated combustion air directly from outside into the stove, reducing draughts within the room while improving combustion and efficiency. The result is a brighter burn, lower emissions, greater comfort and a reduced running costs
