Guide ยท Competent installation
What does a HETAS-registered installer do for the homeowner?
A suitably registered HETAS installer can self-certify qualifying solid-fuel work in England and Wales, notify the local authority and provide a Certificate of Compliance. Registration does not replace a property survey or appliance instructions, but it gives a clear competent-person route.

Registration is tied to approved categories of work
HETAS assesses registered businesses and operatives for defined areas of competence. Before appointing anyone, check the business and the work category in the current HETAS register, and ask to see the installer identification where appropriate.
This matters because a logo on a van or an old certificate is not the same as a current registration covering the proposed installation. HETAS provides a business-checking service for homeowners who want confirmation.
It provides one route through Building Regulations
Solid-fuel installation work must be notified to the relevant local authority. A registered competent person can self-certify work that falls within their approved scope. The alternative is not unnotified work; it is the appropriate building-control process.
After qualifying work, the homeowner should receive the installation paperwork and a Certificate of Compliance. Keep those documents with the appliance instructions and property records.
The survey and specification still matter
Registration does not make every stove suitable for every room. The installer still needs to address heat demand, hearth construction, combustible materials, air supply, chimney condition, flue design, alarm provision and the manufacturer requirements for the exact appliance.
Ask how each of those points will be dealt with in the quotation. A useful proposal describes the complete system and identifies assumptions, rather than treating certification as a substitute for design.
Know what should happen at handover
Commissioning should confirm that the completed installation operates as intended. The homeowner also needs practical instructions on lighting, refuelling, approved fuels, controls, cleaning, sweeping and servicing, plus the notice plate and alarm arrangements required for the work.
The Fireplace and Stove presents its fitting service as HETAS registered. Customers can still verify the current business entry and should retain the documents supplied for their individual installation.
Common questions
Is using HETAS the only lawful way to install a stove?
No. HETAS is a competent-person route. Work outside that route still needs the correct Building Regulations approval and local-authority notification.
How can I check an installer is currently registered?
Use the official HETAS Find Installer service and check the business and relevant categories. HETAS Consumer Support can also help verify registration details.
What paperwork should I keep?
Retain the Certificate of Compliance, commissioning information, appliance and chimney-system instructions, warranties and any records of later servicing or sweeping.
Does a HETAS certificate guarantee the stove model suits my room?
The certificate records qualifying notified work. Correct selection still depends on the survey, heat requirement, appliance instructions and the complete installation design.
