How do you size a wood burner for a particular room?
Room measurements provide a starting point, not a final stove size. Insulation, glazing, exposed walls, ceiling height, open doorways, staircases and normal usage all affect the heat demand. The proposed stove also has to suit the chimney and installation.

Calculate the connected space first
Measure length, width and height, then include spaces that are permanently open to the room. A knocked-through dining area or open staircase can change the volume substantially, while a closable doorway is a different heat path.
Record the measurements, but do not convert them into a purchase without considering heat loss. Simple online ratios are screening tools and often assume a level of insulation that may not describe an older property.
Heat loss is specific to the building
External walls, window area, draughts, floor construction, roof above the room and the desired indoor temperature all affect the useful output. A modern insulated extension and a solid-wall cottage of the same dimensions can need different answers.
How the room is used also matters. Occasional evening warmth, all-day occupation and a space already served well by central heating are different briefs.
Avoid buying spare capacity you cannot use
An oversized stove can make the room uncomfortable at normal output. Owners may then reduce the air too far, which can worsen combustion and deposits. The better aim is an appliance whose useful operating range suits typical conditions.
An undersized model may need to work hard without achieving the comfort expected. Look at the manufacturer output information as a range where available, not only a single large number on a sales card.
Output is only one compatibility check
The selected model also needs a suitable chimney or flue, hearth, clearances, air supply and smoke-control status where relevant. A thermally suitable stove may still be wrong for the available opening or route.

Common questions
Is there a reliable one-line kW calculator?
A room-volume ratio can be a first estimate, but it cannot see insulation, glazing, open spaces or how the room is used. Confirm the output against the building.
Should I round up if I am between two stove sizes?
Not automatically. Compare the usable output ranges and heat-loss factors. Oversizing can be as unhelpful as choosing too little capacity.
Does an open staircase affect stove size?
Yes. Warm air can move into the connected stairwell and upper areas, so the survey should include that opening in the heat-demand discussion.
Can a room stove heat the whole house?
A room heater can influence connected spaces, but it should not be presented as a direct replacement for a designed whole-house heating system without proper assessment.
