Choosing stone

A fireplace with weight, texture and permanence

A stone fireplace suits rooms where the fire needs to feel built in rather than added later. It works in Georgian and Victorian houses, country cottages, farmhouses and renovated rooms where the chimney breast is still the natural focal point. Stone gives the opening weight and proportion, and it can be cut to suit a traditional stove, a cleaner inset appliance or a simple open chamber.

The material choice changes the mood of the room. Limestone is soft, pale and calm, often the easiest fit for period homes. Marble gives more movement and formality. Granite is dense and hard-wearing, especially useful for hearths and border slips. Sandstone has a warmer, more textured character, while slate gives a darker, quieter line where the design needs restraint. We also work with porcelain surfaces where a very clean contemporary face is the right answer.

The Sanderson limestone fireplace is the current example on the site, but the survey is where the right material is chosen. We bring samples into the room so the stone can be judged against the wall colour, flooring, daylight and the stove or fire that will sit with it.

Fitted properly

Made to measure, then made good

A stone surround has to be measured around the real chimney breast, not just the brochure drawing. Older fireplaces are rarely perfectly square, floors can run out, and a previous opening may hide weak brickwork or a flue that needs attention. We plan the surround with the fireplace work, the installation, the hearth and the stove or fire as one finished job.

Making good matters because stone exposes poor preparation. Edges need to be clean, plaster must meet the surround neatly, the hearth has to sit level, and any slips or chamber panels need to handle heat properly. Where a wood burning stove is involved, the fireplace is also checked against the appliance instructions, hearth requirements and flue route so the finished room looks considered and works safely.

Stone work can be quiet and period-led, or stronger and more architectural. The survey is where we decide which direction suits the room, the appliance and the surrounding finishes.

Samples at home

See the stone in your own light

Natural stone changes with the light and the room, so all our surveyors carry a full set of samples. That makes it far easier to choose the finish that complements your interior, whether you are after a soft honed limestone, a characterful gritstone or a contemporary porcelain. Every fireplace is then handcrafted to order and cut to suit your room.

Care depends on the surface. Limestone and marble should be treated gently, with mild cleaning products and no acidic sprays. Granite and slate are harder wearing, but they still look better when cleaned simply and kept free from abrasive residue. We explain the material-specific care at handover so the fireplace keeps its finish once it is in regular use.

Common questions

Stone fireplaces, answered plainly

What stone do you use for fireplaces?

A range of natural stones including limestone, marble, granite, sandstone and slate, as well as the latest porcelain surfaces. Our surveyors carry samples so you can compare materials in your own home and light.

Can a stone fireplace be made to measure?

Yes. Each one is handcrafted to order and can be made to your exact dimensions, with the hearth precision cut and shaped to suit your chimney breast, flooring or chosen stove.

Does a stone fireplace work with a wood burning stove?

Yes. We fit an Antique Leather granite hearth and border slips that form a durable heat barrier between the stove and the surround, and confirm the correct clearances on the home survey.

How do I choose between limestone, marble and granite?

Limestone is calm and traditional, marble brings more pattern and formality, and granite is hard-wearing for hearths and sharper contemporary details. We compare samples in your room before recommending a finish.

How do I care for a stone fireplace?

Use a soft cloth and mild cleaning products, and avoid acidic cleaners on natural stone. We explain the right care for the material you choose, because limestone, marble, granite, sandstone and slate do not all behave in the same way.
